Task 7-Looking back at the Preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to full product?

Looking back at the prelim task there is a clear difference in quality, this is where are various skills have developed and have been applied to our thriller sequence.

The sophistication of the planning and preparation from prelim to main task was completely different. Our prelim task was very basic we had a set storyboard which we slightly altered to make it a more differentiated piece. In comparison to the main task which took weeks of planning it was very easy. With our main task we had discussions over which idea was the best and a realistic possiblility. Was also did many storyboards to perfect are shots and script. We also did many props lists, cast lists and coustume lists. And this is why our main task was so far progressed from the prelim.

When we created the storyboard for our main task we spent much longer deciding on more varied and complicated shots than our prelim task. With our prelim task we had only just grasped how to use the camera and wern’t thinking about shots other than, Close up, Medium shot and a long shot. However with our main task we used a lot more shots. We used a handheld camera which we didn’t in the prelim to create the sens e of the chase scene. We also used pans and high angles and low angles which shows our film making development.

Within our prelim task we focused much more on the dialog and action of the sequence. Where as with our main task we were careful with the mise en scene of every frame. We checked what would be in every background of every scene this is why the work produced will be much more developed. In our prelim task we wern’t careful enough and broke the 180 degree rule, this is why in our main task we were very careful not to brake this rule.

In our prelim task there was no non diegetic sound as the whole sequence was full of dialogue. However with our main task as there was little diaglogue therefore we had to tell the viewer the mood and what is happening within the scene. This would be done by using non diegetic sound in the piece therefore we had to be very careful with our choices.

When we were editing our prelim task it was very basic just cutting them to shape and putting them together . However with our main task we were much more creative for example we put in the credits using title cards from after effects.
Overall i feel that from the prelim task i have progressed a lot being much more capable of filming and developing and also using after effects.
From these screen shots you can see the progression made from prelim to the main task.

Task 4-Target Audience

Our main target audience is between the ages of 15-24 they would like our film because it is an exciting, full of action and mysterious. And that is more appealing to that age group especially males, Men would be the more specific target audience as they are more attracted to the thriller/horror genre. However woman would also want to come and see this film as the main character is a woman. The suspense and the action within a trailer would convince that audience to come and watch the rest of the film. Things that 15-24 year olds would do during the day is either working at school or at a job working. During their free time they would go out with friends, play sport or go out and see a film. Our second audience would be in the age group 25-34 they would still like to see our film

Task 3-What institutions would make our film?

I believe Vertigo would choose to make my film. This is because Vertigo make a lot of other fairly low budget crime/thrillers for example, 1 day, The Business, The Football Factory and Bronson. These films are all very similar to the one that we made this is why our film would fit in with the ethos of the institution. They also use first time directors or relatively unknown directors this is another reason why they would produce our film. For marketing it they would have an advantage already as their audience for their previous films would be similar or the same as the target audience for our film. However the film would start in specific cinema’s as it wouldn’t be big enough to make a mainstream cinema. If it didn’t make that then it would go straight onto DVD, at a similar time it would go onto Blu Ray. After that the film would go onto pay per view, finally the rights would be sold to t.v rights. If the film proved popular then in the future there could be a re release maybe for a bigger audience at a mainstream cinema for increased profits. Vertigo mainly specialise in crime/thriller films most of them have a fairly low budget however there are some exceptions such as ‘the Business’ which had a budget of £2,000,000 with quite big actors like Danny Dyer and Tamer Hassan. However this is an exception with most of the rest having small time actors and low budgets. They definitely target a particular audience with films such as ‘Football Factory’ ‘The Firm’ being violent and football related it’s definitely target at a male audience. My film whilst not being as violent or football orientated it would still be popular with the male audience but also a more varied audience as well.

Task 2-How does my product represent certain social groups

Our product represents many things through exploring technology, the casting of our actors and even through recent events in real life such as the wikileaks scenario.

One of the social groups we chose to represent was young females. We represented that social group very positively we did this by enrolling our main character the hacker as a young, strong, independent female. This is subverting one of the Hollywood stereotypes of young woman being weak and needing a man to look after them. Part of this choice was due to the film‘Girl With a Dragon Tattoo’ where they choose to cast a female hacker who plays a very convincing and Hollywood alternative role.

Throughout our thriller we explore a lot of technology, normally someone who uses that kind of technology would be branded as a ‘nerd’ or ‘un cool’. However we subvert this in our film as we have a cool, modern hacker using this technology to hack into government files.
Also this consistent use of technology represents the younger viewers. It represents how compulsive and dependant younger people are on technology these days. And how they are almost born with an understanding of most technology.

Task 1-What way does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

The most obvious subversion of a stereotype in our thriller would be having the leading role of a hacker played by a woman. However the film 'girl with a dragon tattoo also uses this idea.

Within our thriller we used the idea of the hacker using a lot of technology, this conforms to the usual convention of a thriller, for example 'Die Hard 4'.

The idea of having guns within the thriller strongly conforms to the thriller genre, the high majority of all thriller will use a gun or similar weapon at some point.
Chase scenes are also strongly associated with thrillers, therefore having a chase scene in our thriller conforms to the thriller stereotype. Also the fact it's a woman being chased further conforms to the stereotype.

The idea of fighting is another idea that conforms to the thriller stereotype. However in our case we have a woman beating up a man this subverts to the general stereotype that men are physically stronger than females.
This picture shows the death of someone. This is generally associated with a lot of thrillers therefore conforming to the stereotype.
Our after affects title sequences show the audience what type of thriller it is. The graphs, maps and top secret signs show the idea of it being a hacker film with top secret information.

Casting an attractive female as the main role, upholds the convention that the majority of female character in films will be attractive.
