Preliminary Task

LOCATION

The location we filmed in is a classroom, this worked because the scene was focused around a rubix cube and an educational/intellectual background makes sense for the scene. We all took an active part in the filming because each person wanted to put a lot of input into the scene. However i was given the role as director of the scene so i had to decide when to start filming and cut filming. I also filmed one of the close up shots, the mid shot and a close up of the rubix cube sliding.

LIGHTING
For lighting we decided on having the classroom very light. This is because it was more representetive of an actual classroom, which was effective because it made the scene look a lot more realistic.

FILMING
We set up the camera correctly first opening the tripod up, then fitting the camera on top doing the white balance and bubbling the tripod to balance the camera. After each shot we placed the camera somewhere else with a different degree of angle therefore we had to bubble the tripod to balance it after each shot. We also check the framing was correct each time to make sure the shot would look at good and realistic as possible. We also had to move around the lighting equipment to make sure shadows were not cast into the picture and the lighting looked realistic. We also had to choose appropriate angles to represent the status of characters in the scene. We started filming first with a wide shot, establishing the scene, we ran this through the whole scene. Then moving the camera bubbling the tripod and starting the scene again from a different such as a close up. We did this several times getting over the shoulder, another close up, medium shots. We then filmed the entrance and exit of one character. Finally we focused on the movement of the rubix cube being slammed and then pushed across a desk and pushed back.
We had to take a lot of shots from different angles to make sure we conformed to the 180 degree rule. We had to think about it and move around desks and angles to make sure we didn't break the 180 degree rule. We also made sure we used the right terminology starting and ending the film.

CUT

So far i have learnt the basics of pratical film making such as the different angles representing the characters status. I also learnt about story boarding and the 180 degree rule all of which i had to think about whilst doing my preliminary task.

This is the story board we had to follow.

Introduction to Video Camera

For a couple of weeks we have been learning how to set up and use a video camera and film are own scene. The first thing we learnt was how to set up the tripod and fit the camera onto the top. Next we learnt to bubble the tripod this leveled the balance, the point of this is to steady the camera to get a still shot. Next we learnt the operations of a camera. Timecode, how long you record for. White balancing, which is establishing the correct light and exposure levels. Focusing, we focused on things in the classroom to understand focusing at different distances. The tripod is important because there is a clear difference from this to the handheld, the tripod allows the shot to be filmed completely still.

Then we had to incorporate different camera shots into our scene, such as a wide shot, over the shoulder shot, close up shot and a point of view shot. We also had to follow rules like the 180 degree rule, The 180 degree rule is a basic guideline in film making that states that two characters (or other elements) in the same scene should always have the same left/right relationship to each other. Continuity editing, continuity editing is important because it smooths over the scene so editing is harder to spot. Spacial relationship is also important this is getting everything in the right place when the camera angles change.

Finally before we filmed are scenes we learnt what to call out such as Stand by/Standing by, this shows everyone is ready. Roll film/Rolling film, the director is telling the cameraman to start filming. Action is a cue for the actors to start performing the scene. Cut, cue for the camera man to stop filming. Then we filmed our first scene. There were a few mistakes but the main one was breaking the 180 degree rule.

Media Vocabulary

In our first few weeks in media with have been taught many important words helping us analyse work.

Another way to distance our analysis is to break down the elements of text into "signs"
we can break into two levels of analysis:
Denotation- Describe what you see
connotation-Discuss what the element means
Semiotics- meaning the study of signs
signifier-the object in the picture
signified- the impressions(such as expressions) of that object in the picture
sign- combination of signifier and signified

Photography Composition and Image Manipulation

Composition:
Photography brings a visual language that is universal in understanding. We must then understand its vocabulary which consists of shapes, textures, patterns, lines, colours, shade of light to dark and sharp to blurry images. Just as we must learn to arrange words in a coherent order in order to make sense when we write or speak, so too must we put visual elements together in an organized manner if our photographs are to convey their meaning clearly and vividly.
Composition means arrangement: the orderly putting together of parts to make a unified whole; composition through a personal, intuitive act. However, there are basic principles that govern the way visual elements behave and interact when you combine them inside the four borders of a photograph. Once we have sharpened our vision and grasped these basic ideas of principles, then we will have the potential for making our photographs more exciting and effective than ever before.

In Photoshop we have learnt how to manipulate images to create a unique and new poster idea. We have learnt how to cut out images from a different picture and incorperate that image into the poster to create a certain effect. Then we had to change the the pasted pictures colour to blend into the original picture.

About Myself

My name is Jack Lemon, i went to Box Hill school from year 7 to 11 but i chose to come to Hurtwood to do A levels. I chose Media Studies because i find it a really intresting subject and something that i could work in later on in my life. My faviourite genre of film has to be Action or Thriller.  I have really enjoyed playing sports all my life but especially Football and Cricket
